Most small businesses in Canada pay roughly $300 to $2,500 a month for SEO. Local SEO for one location sits at the lower end; businesses competing across a whole city, several locations or the whole country pay more, often $2,500 to $10,000 a month for national campaigns. A one-time SEO audit typically costs $500 to $5,000.

Our SEO plans are $199, $349 and $599 a month. Here is what you are paying for, what moves the price and how to avoid paying for SEO that does nothing.

These are typical ranges, not quotes. Where you land depends on the factors below.

What you are paying for

SEO is ongoing work, not a one-off setting. A good monthly plan covers:

  • Google Business Profile: set-up, verification, services, photos and regular posts, so you show on Google Maps.
  • Keyword research and tracking: the searches that bring paying customers, tracked every month.
  • On-page fixes: page titles, headings, internal links and schema on your most important pages.
  • Technical SEO: speed, mobile issues, indexing problems and broken pages.
  • Content: articles and pages that answer what your customers search for.
  • Links and citations: your business listed correctly on trusted directories, and other websites linking to you.
  • Reporting: a monthly report showing rankings, traffic and enquiries.

What changes the price of SEO

  1. Competition. A plumber in a small town needs far less work than a law firm targeting the whole GTA.
  2. Number of locations and services. Each city, branch or service needs its own pages and keywords.
  3. The state of your website. A slow site with technical problems needs fixing before rankings can grow.
  4. Content. Writing articles every month costs more than optimising pages you already have.
  5. Links. Earning mentions and links from other websites is the most time-consuming part of SEO.

Monthly, one-time or hourly?

  • Monthly plans suit most businesses, because rankings build over months and Google keeps changing. Expect a minimum term of around 3 months.
  • A one-time audit suits businesses with an in-house person who can make the changes.
  • Hourly consulting suits specific problems, such as a website migration or a sudden drop in traffic.

SEO usually takes 3 to 6 months to show strong results; technical fixes can show within weeks. See how long SEO takes.

Red flags when buying SEO

  • Guaranteed rankings or "#1 on Google". No one controls Google's results.
  • Very cheap link packages. Hundreds of low-quality links can get your site penalised.
  • No monthly report, or reports with rankings but no traffic or enquiries.
  • Long lock-in contracts without clear deliverables.
  • The agency owns your Google Business Profile or analytics accounts. They should always be in your name.

Is SEO cheaper in smaller cities?

Often, yes. It usually takes less work to rank in Calgary, Winnipeg or Hamilton than in downtown Toronto or Vancouver, where more businesses compete for the same searches. See our local pages for SEO in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Calgary and Vancouver.

How much does local SEO cost in Canada?

Local SEO for one location usually costs $300 to $1,000 a month in Canada. Our Local Starter plan is $199 a month and includes Google Business Profile management, 5 tracked keywords, on-page fixes and a monthly report.

Is $500 a month enough for SEO?

For a single-location business in a city of moderate competition, often yes, if the money goes on the right work: your Google Business Profile, on-page fixes, reviews and a few good pages. In very competitive markets it may not be enough to rank for the biggest searches.

Why is SEO a monthly cost?

Rankings build over months, competitors keep improving and Google keeps changing. Monthly work keeps your profile active, adds content and links, and fixes new issues before they cost you traffic.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

Usually, yes. Once you rank, the customers who find you on Google cost nothing per click, unlike ads. It works best for businesses whose customers search on Google before they buy, such as trades, clinics and professional services.

Can I do SEO myself?

You can do the basics yourself: set up your Google Business Profile, ask for reviews and write clear service pages. Read our local SEO checklist. Technical fixes, content and links are where most businesses get help.
